Founded in 2009, the LIFE Institute is a non-profit technical organization specializing in Business and Biodiversity. As a developer of biodiversity standards and metrics, the Institute is responsible for managing the LIFE System, which provides smart solutions to help businesses and the economy integrate biodiversity into their strategies and decision-making.
Since 2010, when it first participated in the Biodiversity COP held in Nagoya, Japan, the LIFE Institute has maintained a presence at every Biodiversity COP. Its mission is to engage businesses in integrating the commitments of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD/UN), contributing to conservation while transforming investments into measurable positive biodiversity performance. This work is based on the understanding that the influence and leadership of companies and their value chains can become powerful drivers of engagement, promoting positive and lasting change for nature.
As one of the founding institutions of the Brazilian Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBNBio), the LIFE Institute is also a member of the Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity, participates in the ALIGN Project – Aligning Accounting Approaches for Nature of the European Business & Biodiversity Platform, and is a member of the Biodiversity Credit Alliance Forum.
Today, the LIFE System operates throughout the European Union and Latin America, while its implementation is currently being consolidated across Africa.

Launched on December 15, 2022 during the COP -15 on Biodiversity in Montreal, Canada, the LIFE Coalition for Business and Biodiversity is formed by a group of companies committed to accelerating the insertion of biodiversity into business strategy, through concrete actions and transformative solutions proposed by the LIFE Institute.

The LIFE Methodology for Business and Biodiversity is an instrument that enables a clear and objective analysis of pressure, impacts (positive and negative), risks, dependencies and opportunities in business’ relationship with biodiversity.
LIFE Biodiversity Credits represent the Nature Positive balance of an organization discounting its pressure on biodiversity, being a tangible and traceable record of the net result of positive actions for biodiversity in an area.
